Úlfabaunir means lupine in Icelandic, and interestingly enough, it isn't even a native flower to the land. Lupine was actually brought over in 1945 to the island, and it flourished there spreading quite rapidly. This particular field wasn't an original spot on our list of things to do; we just happened to be driving past it and saw these rolling hills of purple, and I knew we had to take the next pullout to really take in the scene. One of the distinct differences with lupine in Iceland verses the lupin back home in the mountains like Rainier and St Helens, is this stuff was straight up Jurassic! It was even up to my hips in some areas!
