Lava tubes are incredibly fascinating formations. I was thrilled to go explore down in the depths of the largest one in Iceland! Formed when a low-viscosity lava flow develops a continuous and hard crust, the flow then thickens and forms a roof above the molten lava stream. When the eruption is over and the molten lava all drains away, the tube is what remains. This one was found after two openings broke open the cave. It is unknown how many tubes there are on the island as it is not smart to go romping around and hunting for them. As if it does open you could fall a significant distance.
This image is of the ceiling of that cave, showcasing all the fantastic colors it offers. Impurities from the molten rock and lava is what creates the kaleidoscope of colors. Nature never stops surprising you with unique sites and experiences, so never stop exploring.
