This was my first solar eclipse! When I heard about it, I had a few month's notice. I was definitely new into planning far ahead for astronomical happenings.
It was thrilling to hear that the path of totality was going straight through Oregon. Living in Washington, I figured it would be a breeze to go over to Oregon and catch the beautiful diamond ring effect of the eclipse, over some stunning Oregon scenery.
We traveled down, about a month before the eclipse, to scout out some areas and when we asked at the grocery store if they were excited for the big event, they conveyed their worries about running out of food. It was crazy! We were in this tiny little town, and they had told us a ton of the hotels booked years in advance. Even all of these local farms were renting out space in their fields for people to camp.
We started having second thoughts about traveling to Oregon to get 100% totality—I mean 98-99% is still an A+ shot, right? So, we decided to go to the much less crowded Mt. St. Helens to capture the solar eclipse.
It was still a spectacular event, however not being at totality meant that our area didn't get the diamond ring effect. It was still a fun experience seeing nightfall during the daylight hours and listening to all the wildlife respond to the rare occasion.
If you ever get the chance to travel to see a solar eclipse for yourself, I highly suggest you go for the experience. Just remember, you need special solar glasses to protect your eyes from the eclipse and your cameras will need a special filter too.
